On August 21, 1938, Tillie The Whale, a sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), washed up near what is now Tillicum Campground. Sperm whales are the biggest toothed whales, and Tillie was fifty-feet long and weighed in at about 40 tons. Her skeleton was a tourist attraction at Randall's Shore Pines Cottage Park, about five miles south of Waldport for about ten years.
