In 1985 Blythe Collins, current owner of Bread and Roses Bakery, and her late husband Don Niskanen, built this complex of cottage-like shops and ran The New Morning Coffee House.
Frank Male and Kathy McCulloch purchased this complex and opened The Midtown Guitar Company in Yachats in 2018. Frank, a musician, liked buying guitars and ended up with enough to open a store in Aptos, California, and later one in Santa Cruz. Looking for a place to retire, they sold both stores, packed their neon signs and the best of their inventory into a 16-foot truck--the 21st Century Conestoga Wagon--and moved to Yachats.
While locals have bought guitars from them, a town of 750 only needs so many guitars. Most of the people who walk through Midtown Guitar Company's doors are tourists who enjoy looking at $3,000 guitars but don't tend to buy them as souvenirs. Consequently, most of the guitars they sell they sell via the website reverb.com
