My rates to commission an original cartoon range from $35 to $500. It all depends on how a cartoon is going to be used and how complicated the drawing is.

Usually I charge $150 to draw a black and white cartoon in a style similar to most McHumor ‘toons, $250 for a color one.

I give discounts for commissions of multiple cartoons.

I charge self publishing authors $20 for cartoons I’ve already drawn. Sometimes a drawing works for people if the caption is changed. I charge $35 for original cartoons if the author buys a total of 10 cartoons. I know how hard it is for authors to sell enough copies to cover this expense so I only try to gouge people for as much as they feel comfortable being gouged for.

  1. I am an unpublished author who is seeking an affordable illustrator (black and white drawn images) for a self-published book on natural skin treatment of the skin and inflammatory conditions. Cartoons are needed to clearly get across immunological principles related to diet, digestion and immune function as contributors to disorders involving skin inflammation. These cartooned concepts are intended to help get across to the public how to apply these principles to everyday steps to be taken to correct inflammatory skin disorders. Concepts include leaky gut, immune tolerance, and cross-reactive attack on tissue targets. Please respond with a link to your work or attached examples and your typical finished per-image rate.

    Thanks

    1. Dear Dr. Dattner:
I only now saw your question. I charge self published authors $20 for cartoons I’ve already drawn. Sometimes a drawing works for people if the caption is changed. I charge $35 for original cartoons if the author buys a total of 10 cartoons. No matter what, best of luck with your book and I hope you return to my site whenever you need a laugh.
      Mirthfully yours,

  2. I am actively trying to choose between a number of illustrators, to do black and white drawings in a style that conveys the concepts I have, in a way that fits my style, budget, and time line. I am currently considering 10-14 full page illustrations.

This should give you a better idea of what I am looking for.

    Example of illustration style desired:

I would like to convey my understanding of the mechanism behind such concepts as:
    Antigen recognition and response
    Cross-reactive immune recognition
    Digestion and food allergens
    Leaky gut and gut flora
    etc

I am attaching a link to two of Dr Oz’s books whose illustration style appeals to me as a way to convey concepts memorably, with both humor and information.
    The first link is:

    The second is:

    click on the book picture,
and then click on look inside,
and then click on the arrow to the right of the book,
and then scroll down to the 4th page, which is a full page drawing. There are other short drawings in the book, but I need to convey a more complex relationship than those short ones give.

    Best,

    Dr Dattner
